Yahoo Movies Asks: Is There A Double-standard In Hollywood?……?
Tuesday, November 24th, 2009The question was asked because of the outrage over Miley Cyrus’ photos a year ago and the fact that Lautner in the new Twilight movies is only two years older than Miley was then, and he is appearing shirtless (and in a very sexy manner) in the Twilight movies. I think there IS a double-standard in Hollywood. Boys and men have always (and in every field/society/culture) been held to a different set of standards. That’s why people feel it’s no big deal for a boy to be shirtless in a movie/commercial in a overtly sexy manner, but then feel complete disdain when a girl “appears” to be shirtless in the name of art/photography. I thought Miley’s photos were tasteful and were not sexually exploitative. I don’t think those photos were any worse than the tiny shorts she wears in her latest video, the pole she danced on that award show, or her kissing scenes on Hanna Montanna. I think people expect for girls to act more responsible, but why? Shouldn’t we ALL be responsible. Then people expect for young stars to be role models, when really, SHOULDN’T WE BE OUR KIDS ROLE MODELS? I mean, we don’t know those young stars personally, we don’t know what kind of values they were raised with and we can’t trust T.V. execs to always write/produce/make shows, stars or programs with our kids’ best interest in mind. Young stars should not be looked up to as role models, they are only entertainers. And who cares if Miley’s parents think it’s okay for her to be topless in a magazine, those are her parents’ values… has nothing to do with the rest of us. Sit your kids down and tell them why they shouldn’t follow the example of certain stars or why certain actions are okay for stars and maybe not okay for your kids…. and anyway, doesn’t ALL young boys go around topless anyway? What’s the big deal? Am I right (which I rarely appear to be) or am I wrong (which I always seem to be)? What do you think?
