Why Is The Trend In Hollywood To Cast Black Or “people Of Color” In Remakes Of Movies And Tv Shows?
It seems like every movie that has come out in the last ten years that was a remake of the original casts person of color in the lead role that was originally written as a white person. The lastest edition of this that caught my attention was the casting of Will Smith’s son as “Daniel LaRusso” in the remake of “The Karate Kid” that is being filmed right now. Another example is casting Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson as lead role in “Walking Tall” That movie was a true story about a white man, so why cast a black person?
There is talk of a “Commando” remake with Dwayne Johnson playing the role formally played by Arnold Swartznegger.
The list goes on and on so I won’t conitinue to list examples, I’m just wondering if anyone knows the reason they do this now. I don’t have any doubts about these actors talents, but it is kind of dumb to cast a person to play a role that is a different race, especially if it was a true story in the first place.

It’s Hollywood’s racial agenda to convince us that people of color are superior, and to make them feel good about themselves.

its all about not offending people nd making up for our undemocratic ways of discriminating against other races in the past ..its all about being politically correct..nd its ridiculous in my opinion..

There are a couple of reasons. It is a different way to tell the same story as well as bringing in a new audience. The Karate Kid series did a similar thing by casting Hilary Swank years ago in the third installment I think it was. In addition, Dwayne Johnson is a proven box office draw, so regardless of race, he makes sense for carrying a large remake because he has carried many box office hits. Also, look at the film remake of the Honeymooners. If you had cast actors like the originals, Jackie Gleason and Audrey Meadows, people probably would not have been able to separate it from other romantic comedies out today. By casting Cedric the Entertainer and Gabrielle Union, they were able to reinvent the show and make fun of many of the things that made the original Honeymooners unique. Otherwise, it might not stand out as a remake and not make box office money which is what the films are set to do.
