My older children are 11 and 9 years of age, and my youngest is almost 2. It can definitely be challenging! It was easier when she was younger and slept a lot, and we could plan my giving lessons around her naps, and they would do independent work while I tended to her needs.
Now, though, she of course is active and wants to be a part of everything. We involve her as much as possible-she listens to us read stories aloud, when they are doing writing work she sits at the table with them and colors. We also have toys that are for her to play with ONLY during school time-that keeps them interesting because she does not always have access to them.
One big factor, though, is that in a traditional school setting the teacher is always directly in front of the class, even when not giving lessons. In a homeschool setting, we are with our children when we are giving lessons but while they are doing independent work we can be in another room.
It is something that worried me a lot, but once we started doing it (homeschooling with an active toddler), I found that it was not as difficult. Like everything else, you learn to accomodate.

I don’t have children, but my sister has 3, one of which is getting homeschooled, the other two are only 3 and 4. What she does is, if she can, she has someone else watch the children while she is homeschooling, if no one can watch the kids, then she tries to find activities that would make the younger children accupied while she is teaching, but she could still keep them withing eye sight.(kids love crafts, or even dress-up)

My kids are 11, 7 (today), and 3. Typically we do most of our school work during nap time. Naps are our friend (LOL).
We also keep a basket of toys for during school time only. She is allowed to play with them only during school times and she has to pick them up when she is done with them.
We are starting her education this year by teaching her to read and count. She’s ready for it and wants to learn so why not. We aren’t going to stress out if she changes her mind and decided to play instead.
My older daughter is more independent and can do most of her work by herself. If the toddler is being a pain she goes some where else to work.
Since we live in the south my kids can also be outside for longer periods of time all year round. I go out with them and let the baby play as long as the weather permits us too.

I have a box of special items for the little one to play with while I do things with my oldest. I also try to include him in on the lessons as much as possible. He really enjoys it and is learning so much, even though he can’t read or write yet! If your little one still naps (mine does not), definitely take advantage of that time with your older ones.
